Top 10 Bodyboarding spots in Portugal

Portugal it’s in a really hard and serious crisis, everyone knows that, people are struggling, the unemployment rate is higher than ever, but one thing that does not lacks in Portugal is… WAVES. We were blessed. Thanks King Neptune. All kind of waves grace the 1,783km of the Portuguese coastline, from sand bottoms to rocky ones, from giant killer waves like Praia do Norte, Nazaré, to gentle family friendly waves, for the experienced and for the beginners with consistency throughout all year, all kind of waves and… Lot’s of fun. And that’s one thing that Troika can not touch… Well, unless they start taxing the waves as well, but let’s not give them any ideas. Schhhhh….

By now you should be able to guess what’s the best surfing destination in Europe? No? Not yet? I’ll give you a hint, it’s starts with a “P” and end’s with “ortugal”, yeap, that’s right, Portugal, that’s why we host some of the best surfing and bodyboarding events in the world and have the second world surfing reserve, Ericeira.

But this post isn’t about surfing, someone from the Outitude team, told me that i posted too many stuff about surfing, and he’s right, I’m a surfer, Kelly Slater is one of my two favourite sport personalities in the world (MJ23 being the other), so i got carried away with the sport that i know best, it was only natural, but rest assured, i can tell you now, that this post is not about surfing, it’s about another noble art of slicing through the waves, so this post is about… Bodyboard, as you could guess by the title. Slater’s fans, this post is not for you, this post is for Mike Stewart and Guilherme Tâmega wannabes, for the lovers of the insanely high aerials, 360’s and El Rollo’s (love the name of this trick, so i had to figure out a way to put it in this post).

I know that these are well know spots, but remember, the name of the post was not “The Top 10 Secret spots”. The Portuguese coast, with it’s beachbreaks and concealed bays, is full of unknown spots begging to be surfed , and you don’t have to go far from famous/crowded beaches to find yourself alone with your friends surfing some quality waves, all you need is a car and a adventurous spirit. Just go for it.

5 things to do in Lisbon...

So, you are travelling to the beautiful and sunny capital of Portugal, Lisbon? What to do? Where should you go? What to see?

I have been living in Lisbon for 5 years now, and a lot of friends, when having guests ask me exactly the same questions…”Ohhh my friend from Erasmus is coming over, where should i take him?”, which is kind of weird, if you think about it, since some of them were born here, but i have been know to find this weird and cool places, so let’s see if i can help you…

I will give you 5 tips, my personal choices mixing it with some Outitude flavour because this is the Outitude Blog after all. So, the idea is that if i had a friend coming over, were would i take him and what activities from Outitude would i use to show him this magnificent city…

-LX Factory: This was where Outitude had it´s first office and i just love this place, it’s such a cool place with a magnificent vibe. You might be thinking,” I’m travelling and you want me to see offices?” Well, yes and no. Just enter the gates and in the main road, try the best chocolate cake that i have ever eaten at “Landeau”, try the Ice Cream at “Chef Nino”, enter bookstore “Ler devagar” and dazzle yourself, here go to the second floor and try the magnificent cakes from Marta at “O Bolo da Marta”. Now move to the main building, explore the corridors where you can have, literally, a glimpse of all the cool companies and spaces. While walking around LX Factory find all the awesome examples from street art provided by artists invited by Wool On Tour. You can also have lunch, dinner or just a drink at one of the cool restaurants in the LX Factory grounds, and if you are lucky enough to be in Lisbon in LX Factory Open Days (twice per year) don’t miss it, it’s a hell of a party. How to get there? -Custard tart: Yeap! All the touristic guides talk about it, i know, but i agree, it’s mandatory, go to Belém and eat my favourite cake. Will you be able to eat just one? I doubt it. Get inside and have a glimpse at the manufacturing of this devilish good cake. You are on holiday remember? So forget about calories. If you enjoy art, and since you are in Belém, go to CCB and make sure you enjoy the private collection from Joe Berardo, it’s freaking awesome. Now, when going back to you country, if you say, i went to Belém in Lisbon and i saw Padrão and Torre dos Descobrimentos, your friends are going to say, “I did it too!”, so, why not make then some envy and do it with a Segway (http://outitude.com/en/segway-tours/world/segway-tours-in-bethlehem)?

Give a twist to your visit to Belém and try a Segway

-I have a degree in Architecture, so i will take anyone that comes to Lisbon to Chiado, Baixa Pombalina and Avenida da Liberdade to have a glimpse of the Architecture and a little of history about the Earthquake. You shouldn’t miss the ruins from convento do Carmo, the new Museum of Fashion and Design (MUDE), take a look inside Hard Rock Cafe Lisboa and don’t forget to look up, surprise, surprise, it’s a car hanging from the ceiling. Be sure not to miss São Domingos church, i will not describe it so i don’t spoil the strenght of this magnificent church and it’s curious state of “conservation”… Check it! Mandatory! After exiting the church just have a Ginginha (liqueur made of berries) to get your act together again. And by now you might be thinking, is this guy nuts, doesn’t he know that Lisbon is full of hills? Yes i do! -Fado: Considered world cultural heritage by Unesco in 2010. I will be honest to you, i don’t listen to it while at home or in the car stereo, but i love to go to Alfama and go from one Casa do Fado to another, eating some cheese and ham with a glass of wine.
